Kotor City Walls Hike: Routes, Tickets, Timing and What to Expect

Plan the Kotor City Walls hike with route advice, fortress highlights, ticket guidance and practical tips for tackling its steep stone steps.

Updated October 2026 · Tours to Balkans

The Kotor city walls hike is the defining active experience in Montenegro’s best-known walled town. It climbs high above the UNESCO-listed Old Town, following a dramatic defensive line towards St John’s Fortress. The reward is not simply a summit view. You see how Kotor’s stone lanes, mountain slopes and deep bay fit together as one extraordinary landscape.

This is a short route on a map, but it is a serious uphill walk. The old steps are steep, uneven and exposed to the sun. Come prepared, choose a sensible time of day, and treat the ascent as the main event rather than a quick detour between cafés.

Why the Kotor City Walls hike is worth the effort

Kotor’s fortifications climb the mountainside in an improbable sweep of stone. Built and expanded through centuries of strategic rule, including the Venetian period, they protected the town from the slopes above. Today, their scale is best understood on foot.

The main destination is St John’s Fortress, also known as San Giovanni. Its weathered ruins sit high over Kotor Bay, and the ascent provides changing views at every turn. Below, the Old Town appears tightly contained by its walls. Beyond it, the bay narrows between steep limestone mountains.

The climb has a strong sense of progression. At first, you are close to the rooftops and lanes of Kotor. Higher up, the town becomes a small geometric patchwork beside the water. By the time you reach the fortress, the view feels broad enough to explain why this position mattered so much.

It is also a more physical experience than many visitors expect. That is part of its appeal. The walls are not a level promenade, and the fortress is not reached by a polished tourist path. The climb asks for care, sturdy footing and patience.

The official stair route to St John’s Fortress

For most travellers, the official stone stair route is the best choice. It is direct, historically atmospheric and easy to understand once inside the fortified hillside. The usual access lies near the Ploče Gate area, close to the northern side of Kotor Old Town.

The route rises steadily on old stone steps, with walls and defensive structures appearing above and below you. Avoid rushing the first section. The gradient soon becomes clear, especially in warm weather, and frequent pauses make the experience far more enjoyable.

Church of Our Lady of Remedy: the essential midpoint

Partway up stands the small Church of Our Lady of Remedy, one of the most memorable stops on the route. Its simple stone form and hillside setting make it a fine place to rest, take photographs and look back over the bay.

Many walkers consider the chapel terrace a satisfying turnaround point if they do not want the full ascent. You still gain a strong view of Kotor and a real sense of the walls’ height. However, those with the energy to continue should do so. The higher section reveals a more dramatic perspective and leads to the main fortress ruins.

The final push to San Giovanni

Above the chapel, the route becomes more exposed and the surface can feel rougher. The steps remain the central challenge, rather than navigation. Watch where you place your feet, especially on worn or loose-looking stone.

St John’s Fortress is not a museum interior with a neat viewing platform. It is a ruined defensive complex on a mountain slope. That raw setting is exactly what makes the summit memorable. Take time to look down the line of the walls and across the curve of Kotor Bay before beginning the descent.

Tickets, entrances and route etiquette

The main Kotor City Walls access is ticketed, and the official entrance is the sensible choice for the standard hike. Ticket arrangements and access rules can change, so check the information displayed locally before setting out. Do not assume that every gap in the walls, side track or informal-looking trail provides legitimate access.

The official stair route also gives the clearest experience of the fortifications. You pass the chapel, follow the defended hillside and arrive at St John’s Fortress by the historic approach. It is the route that best connects the physical effort of the hike with Kotor’s landscape and history.

Bring what you need before entering. There is little shade once you are high on the slope, and you should not rely on finding water or facilities along the walls. Carry ample drinking water, particularly from late spring through early autumn.

Respect barriers and keep to the established route. The mountainside is steep, and the stonework is old. Unofficial shortcuts may look tempting from below, but they can involve unstable ground, unclear access or exposed terrain.

The Ladder of Kotor: a longer alternative

The Ladder of Kotor is a separate proposition from the official walls ascent. This old serpentine trail climbs the mountainside above Kotor in a long series of switchbacks. It offers wider, more rugged mountain scenery and feels more like a true hike than a historic stair climb.

Some experienced walkers combine the Ladder of Kotor with a descent through the fortress area, creating a larger loop-like outing. This option requires more route awareness, more water and greater confidence on uneven trails. It is not the best choice for someone who simply wants the classic city-walls experience.

If St John’s Fortress is your priority, take the official route. Choose the Ladder of Kotor when you want extra distance, a broader view over the bay and a more backcountry feel. Conditions on higher paths can change quickly, so avoid exposed slopes during storms or intense heat.

When to climb: heat, light and crowds

In warm months, early morning or later afternoon is usually the most comfortable time for the hike. The walls have limited shade, and the pale stone reflects heat. A climb in strong midday sun can feel far tougher than the route appears from Kotor Old Town.

Morning brings softer light over the town and bay. Later in the day, the mountainside can offer warmer colours and a gentler atmosphere, although you should leave enough daylight for a careful descent. The stone steps deserve your full attention in low light.

Kotor can be busy when visitors arrive in the Old Town, while the walls naturally spread people out as they climb. Even so, narrow sections may feel congested. A calmer time of day gives you more space to stop safely, take photographs and enjoy the view without feeling hurried.

Wind, rain and high heat all change the character of this outing. Wet stone can be slippery, while hot conditions increase the risk of dehydration. If the weather feels extreme, save the climb for another time and enjoy Kotor at street level instead.

How difficult is the climb?

The Kotor City Walls hike suits reasonably fit travellers who are comfortable walking uphill on irregular stone steps. It does not require technical hiking skills, but it does demand balance and steady pacing. The descent can feel harder on the knees than the ascent.

Those with a fear of heights may find parts of the route uncomfortable, especially where the slope drops away from the path. You can manage this by moving slowly, keeping your focus on the steps and resting at broad viewpoints rather than on narrow sections.

What to wear and carry

  • Sturdy shoes: Trainers with good grip may work in dry conditions, but supportive walking shoes are better for uneven stone.
  • Water: Carry more than you think you will need, particularly in hot weather.
  • Sun protection: A hat, sunscreen and sunglasses make the exposed climb far more comfortable.
  • Light layers: The summit can feel cooler or windier than the streets below.
  • A small daypack: Keep your hands free for balance on steep sections.

Leave sandals and unstable footwear for the Old Town. The stone steps can be polished by use, and secure footing is more valuable than looking dressed for the waterfront.

After the descent: enjoy Kotor Old Town

The descent brings you back into Kotor Old Town, where the contrast is striking. After the exposed mountainside, its narrow lanes feel cool, enclosed and peaceful. This is the right moment for a slow walk, a meal or a drink in one of the small squares.

Follow the town walls towards the southern side if you want to see the atmospheric Gurdic Gate, where the fortifications meet the water and mountain edge. There is no need to turn the post-hike stroll into another checklist. Let the compact streets provide a gentler counterpoint to the climb.

The cable car above the wider bay is another way to gain elevation, but it is not access for the city walls hike. It is a separate outing, with its own ticket and transport considerations, linking the Dub area with the Lovćen slopes. Choose it for a low-effort panorama, not as a replacement for San Giovanni.

Travellers seeking a larger hiking day can also look across the bay to Vrmac Ridge. Its forest and ridge paths offer views back towards Kotor, but they belong to a different hiking area altogether. For one essential Kotor ascent, the old walls and St John’s Fortress remain the most powerful choice.
