Ulcinj’s Long Beach, Ada Bojana and Old Town: Which Area Suits Your Stay?

Decide where to stay in Ulcinj by comparing Old Town, Mala Plaža, Velika Plaža and Ada Bojana for beaches, sightseeing and quieter escapes.

Updated October 2026 · Tours to Balkans

Choosing where to stay in Ulcinj shapes the whole character of your holiday. This is not a resort town with one obvious centre. Ulcinj stretches from the historic citadel and compact town beach to the long sandy coast of Velika Plaža and the river-meets-sea scenery of Ada Bojana. The best base depends on whether you value evening walks, beach space, water sports or peace and privacy.

A quick guide to Ulcinj’s best areas

  • Ulcinj Old Town: best for first-time visitors, history, restaurants and atmospheric evenings.
  • Mala Plaža: best for travellers who want a central beach and easy access to town.
  • Velika Plaža: best for long beach days, sandy shores and a more resort-focused stay.
  • Ada Bojana: best for kitesurfing, seafood, nature and a slower escape.
  • Liman and Valdanos: better for quiet scenery than for a classic beach-and-town holiday.

Ulcinj Old Town: the best base for sightseeing

Ulcinj Old Town is the strongest all-round choice for travellers visiting for the first time. Its stone lanes, historic walls and elevated sea views give the area a distinct sense of place. You can spend the day exploring the citadel, then move easily into the surrounding town for dinner and an evening stroll.

The Old Town also sits close to Mala Plaža, Ulcinj’s central town beach. That makes it a practical option for visitors who want to combine heritage with a swim, without relying on transport every day. The beach itself feels urban and compact, rather than secluded, but its location is hard to beat.

What to consider before booking

Old Town accommodation suits travellers who enjoy character over convenience. Streets can be steep, and parking is limited in the historic core. Properties may also involve steps, narrow approaches and hillier walks than the map suggests.

Choose this area if you want Ulcinj’s historic atmosphere outside your door. It is less suitable if your ideal holiday means a wide sandy beach and effortless access by car.

Mala Plaža: beach and town in one compact stay

Mala Plaža is a sensible choice for couples, short-stay visitors and families who prefer to stay close to everyday facilities. The beach lies below the Old Town, with cafés, promenades and central Ulcinj nearby. You can reach the citadel on foot, while still having the sea within easy reach.

Its main trade-off is atmosphere. During the warmer months, Mala Plaža feels lively, built-up and busy. The bay is far smaller than Velika Plaža, so travellers seeking open horizons and long walks on sand may find it limiting.

However, Mala Plaža works well if you do not plan to rent a car. It gives you the most connected version of an Ulcinj beach break, with the Old Town providing a memorable backdrop.

Velika Plaža: best for long sandy beach days

Velika Plaža, also known as Long Beach, is the right choice for travellers who put beach time first. This broad stretch of sand runs for about 13 kilometres south of Ulcinj, offering a completely different feel from the town’s smaller coves. There is more room to spread out, more open coastline and a stronger sense of a classic seaside holiday.

Accommodation around Velika Plaža ranges across a large area rather than clustering around one walkable centre. Some stays sit near beach facilities, while others are set back among roads, fields and low-rise neighbourhoods. Check the exact position of your property if being able to walk to the sand matters to you.

Who should stay near Long Beach?

This area suits families, groups, drivers and travellers who want unhurried beach days. It is also a good base for people who prefer modern apartments, more space and a less urban setting than central Ulcinj.

The compromise is distance from the Old Town. You can certainly visit the citadel and central restaurants, but you should not treat them as being around the corner. A car makes this part of Ulcinj much easier, while taxis can also be useful for occasional evenings in town.

Consider Štoj for a calmer beach base

Štoj is a practical alternative for travellers drawn to Velika Plaža but wanting a more residential setting. It lies in the wider Long Beach area and offers convenient access to the coast, yet feels more spread out than central Ulcinj. It is best suited to visitors with a car and those happy to trade walkable nightlife for space and a quieter rhythm.

Ada Bojana: for kitesurfing, river views and a slower escape

Ada Bojana sits at the mouth of the Bojana River, where the river meets the Adriatic. It feels separate from the main town and should be chosen as a destination in its own right, not simply as another Ulcinj beach district. The landscape is flatter, wilder and more relaxed than the Old Town or Mala Plaža.

This is the best area for kitesurfers and travellers who enjoy spending most of the day outdoors. The river setting also gives Ada Bojana a distinctive food scene, with seafood restaurants set along the water. Evenings tend to centre on simple meals, sunsets and the natural surroundings rather than town-based sightseeing.

Is Ada Bojana right for you?

Book Ada Bojana if you want to slow down, enjoy the water and escape the denser parts of the coast. It works particularly well for longer stays where the beach, wind sports and river landscape are the main event.

It is the least convenient base for daily trips to Ulcinj Old Town. If historic streets, shopping and varied evening options are central to your plans, stay closer to town and visit Ada Bojana as part of a beach day instead.

Quiet alternatives: Liman and Valdanos

For a quieter stay near the historic centre, consider Liman. This coastal area lies close to the Old Town and offers rocky coves, sea views and scenic walks. It is a good fit for travellers who prefer swimming from rocks or platforms over a sandy beach, and who do not mind hills.

Valdanos, northwest of Ulcinj, is more secluded again. Olive groves and a sheltered bay create a peaceful setting that appeals to couples and travellers seeking privacy. It is not the best choice for a first visit focused on Ulcinj’s restaurants and Old Town life, as evening choices are more limited.

Nature-minded visitors may also appreciate the wider landscape around Ulcinj Salina. It reinforces the region’s quieter side, though it is better viewed as part of an explorative stay than a reason to choose a specific accommodation district.

Getting around: choose your base honestly

Ulcinj’s key areas are not all easily connected on foot. Old Town and Mala Plaža work best for visitors who want a compact, town-based holiday. Velika Plaža, Štoj and Ada Bojana offer more beach space, but transport becomes more important.

A car gives you the greatest freedom if you stay along Long Beach or at Ada Bojana. It also makes it easier to explore quieter coves and olive-growing landscapes outside the centre. In contrast, staying in Old Town may mean accepting restricted parking and steep approaches in return for its atmosphere.

For the most balanced first visit, choose Ulcinj Old Town or Mala Plaža. Choose Velika Plaža when sand and sea are your priority. Choose Ada Bojana when you want kitesurfing, riverfront seafood and a true retreat from town life.
