Morning: Enter Diocletian’s Palace through the Golden Gate

Make Diocletian’s Palace the anchor of your day. Built for the Roman emperor Diocletian in the early fourth century, it is not a sealed-off archaeological site. Homes, shops, cafés, stairways and small squares fill its ancient walls, creating the distinctive atmosphere that defines Split’s UNESCO-listed historic centre.

Approach from the north through the Golden Gate, once the palace’s grand imperial entrance. Outside stands the large statue of Gregory of Nin, a medieval bishop whose image has become one of Split’s best-known landmarks. From here, step into the narrow lanes and let the layout unfold gradually.

Wander before following a route

The palace rewards a little aimless exploration. Look for fragments of Roman masonry beside later Venetian, medieval and Austro-Hungarian details. Small courtyards often open unexpectedly from passages that seem barely wide enough for two people to pass.

The Cathedral of Saint Domnius occupies Diocletian’s former mausoleum, an unusual and striking transformation. A building intended for a Roman emperor later became the spiritual heart of the city. Its location beside the Peristyle makes it impossible to separate the cathedral from the palace story.

If you are comfortable with heights and steep, narrow stairs, climb the bell tower for one of Split’s finest central views. The panorama brings the day’s route into focus: palace roofs below, the Riva facing the sea, ferries in the harbour, and Marjan rising to the west. From Roman lanes to civic Split

Continue to Pjaca, or People’s Square. This historic civic space shows how Split expanded beyond its Roman foundations. Its façades reflect later Renaissance and Venetian influences, and the cafés make it a pleasant place for a coffee break.

A short walk away, Republic Square, known locally as Prokurative, opens towards the waterfront. Its elegant nineteenth-century arcades have a different mood from the palace: wider, more formal and distinctly Mediterranean. It provides a graceful transition from old-town streets to the sea.

Lunch and an unhurried walk along the Riva

By midday, settle into the rhythm of the Riva Promenade. This palm-lined waterfront is Split’s communal living room, where locals meet friends, visitors pause after sightseeing, and the harbour provides constant movement.

Choose a lunch spot around the waterfront or in the lanes just behind it. There is no need to turn lunch into another checklist item. A long meal and a walk along the water are part of the Split experience, especially after the enclosed passages of the palace.

Walk west along the Riva towards the base of Marjan. On one side, the old palace walls and waterfront façades hold the city together. On the other, the Adriatic opens towards the islands. The ferry-port setting also explains why Split feels both historic and outward-looking.

Afternoon: Climb into Marjan Forest Park

For a one-day visit, choose Marjan Forest Park over an island excursion. The hill is close enough to reach on foot, yet it gives the day a complete change of scene. Within a relatively short distance, the city’s stone lanes give way to pine trees, rocky paths and open sea views.

Follow the steps and paths above the western edge of the old town. The climb is uphill, so wear shoes with grip and allow time to stop. It is not a demanding mountain outing, but it is more physical than the mostly level route through central Split.

Pause at Vidilica

The classic destination is the Vidilica viewpoint, where Split spreads beneath you. From this height, Diocletian’s Palace appears as a compact block of pale stone, while the Riva traces the harbour edge and the islands sit across the water.

Stay longer if the light is good, or continue along Marjan’s paths if you want more quiet. The point is not to cover every corner of the park. On a short visit, the viewpoint delivers the essential reward: space, shade and a clear view of Split’s relationship with the sea.

Choose your sunset finish

For the simplest finish, return to the Riva. Early evening brings a relaxed energy to the promenade, and the palace walls take on a warmer colour as daylight fades. It is the best choice if you want dinner nearby and an easy walk back through the centre.

If you would rather stay away from the busiest central stretch, continue through Marjan towards Sustipan Park. Its coastal position makes it a peaceful option for looking out across the harbour and sea.

Alternatively, choose Bačvice Beach on the eastern side of the centre. It is a better fit for travellers who want a swim or a beachside drink rather than a hill walk. However, if this is your first and only day in Split, Marjan usually offers the more memorable city panorama.

How to make the day work

Keep the morning for the palace. Its maze of passages, the Peristyle and the cathedral are Split’s non-negotiable sights.
Expect uneven surfaces. Old-town lanes can be polished, irregular and slippery underfoot, so comfortable shoes matter.
Be realistic about the bell tower. The climb involves steep, narrow stairs and may not suit everyone.
Leave the islands for another day. A boat trip can be wonderful, but it dilutes a one-day city itinerary.
Check access before visiting monuments. Cathedral and bell-tower arrangements may vary, so confirm them locally.
