Maribor and Pohorje: Cable Car Access, Easy Walks and How to Plan a City-and-Mountain Day

Plan an easy escape from Maribor to Pohorje, with cable-car access, gentle forest walks, old-town sights and alternative day-trip ideas.

Updated November 2026 · Tours to Balkans

Pohorje from Maribor is the city’s simplest route into Slovenia’s wooded mountain landscapes. It suits travellers who want fresh air and gentle walking without committing to a demanding hike or a long transfer. With the old town close by, you can combine a mountain outing with riverside streets, historic squares and local wine culture in one satisfying day.

Maribor, Slovenia — Ptuj in Maribor, Slovenia

Pohorje is the natural choice for a low-effort escape, but it is not the only option. Choose the mountain for forest paths and cooler upland air. Choose the vineyard roads northeast of Maribor for wine landscapes, or head to Ptuj when medieval streets and a castle matter more than scenery underfoot.

Choose the right outing from Maribor

For an easy mountain break: Mariborsko Pohorje

Mariborsko Pohorje rises immediately southwest of the city and forms the eastern edge of the Alps. Its slopes are well known for winter sports, yet the mountain also works beautifully outside the snow season. Forest, clearings and broad plateau landscapes give the area a different feel from the urban Drava valley below.

This is the best choice if you have limited time, prefer a flexible day, or are travelling without a car. You can spend a few hours walking near the upper station, enjoy the woodland setting, and return to Maribor for dinner. More active visitors can extend the outing towards the higher plateau.

For wine-country scenery: Heart of the Vineyards road

The Heart of the Vineyards road is a better alternative if walking is secondary to wine landscapes. The rolling hills northeast of Maribor hold vineyards, farms, village lanes and viewpoints over the borderland countryside. It is a scenic route rather than a single attraction, so it rewards an unhurried approach.

A car, designated driver or organised tour makes this option far easier. It is not the strongest choice for travellers seeking a simple half-day stroll, but it is ideal for those who want tastings and rural views to shape the day.

For medieval character: Ptuj

Ptuj lies east of Maribor and offers a very different excursion. Its castle stands above an old town beside the Drava, creating a compact historic setting that feels distinct from Maribor’s more relaxed city centre. Choose Ptuj if museums, old lanes and architecture appeal more than mountain trails.

It is a meaningful substitute for Pohorje, not an add-on to squeeze into the same day. A Pohorje day works best when you want nature; a Ptuj day works best when you want history.

Reaching Pohorje from Maribor

The Pohorska vzpenjača, Maribor’s cable car, is the most direct way to reach the slopes without tackling the steep ascent on foot. Its lower station sits near the city, and the ride lifts visitors towards the Pohorje plateau. That change in elevation is what makes the mountain accessible for casual walkers and families.

The cable car is especially valuable for a city-and-mountain day because it preserves your energy for the upper landscape. Instead of treating the climb as the main challenge, you can focus on an easy walk among conifers and open patches of meadow.

However, do not build your whole day around an assumed departure. Cable-car operation can vary with the season, maintenance needs and mountain conditions. Check its status directly before setting out, particularly outside the busiest holiday periods.

If the uplift is unavailable, Pohorje may still be reachable by road or local transport arrangements, but it becomes less straightforward without a car. In that case, Maribor’s old town or the nearby wine hills may make a better low-effort plan.

Once above the city, Pohorje feels quieter and more spacious. The key is to match your walk to the time available. The area is excellent for relaxed woodland wandering, but distances across the plateau can become substantial if you keep going.

Stay close for a simple forest stroll

For the easiest outing, remain near the upper cable-car area and follow well-used paths through the forest. This approach gives you the atmosphere of Pohorje without turning the day into a technical hike. Wear shoes with grip, as roots, loose ground and damp sections are common in mountain woodland.

Keep expectations sensible. Pohorje is rewarding for its trees, fresh air and sense of escape, not because every short path leads to a dramatic summit panorama. Conditions can shift quickly, and views depend on the day.

Continue to Areh for a longer plateau day

Areh is one of the best bases on upper Pohorje for travellers who want more time outdoors. Set amid forests and meadows, it has a gentler, more remote feeling than the slopes above Maribor. Its network of walking opportunities makes it a strong choice for a longer mountain day.

Areh is generally easier to reach by car or onward transport than by relying solely on the cable car. If you have your own vehicle, it can be a more practical starting point than the lower mountain. It also gives you more freedom to choose a short circular walk or a longer outing across the plateau.

Trije kralji is another upper-mountain alternative for drivers. Like Areh, it offers access to woodland walking in a quieter resort setting. It is less convenient for visitors without a car, so it works best as part of a self-drive Pohorje day.

A half-day plan: old Maribor and the mountain

Travellers without a car can create a very balanced half-day by combining Maribor Old Town with the cable car. Begin in the compact centre, where Main Square, or Glavni Trg, anchors the historic core. From there, walk down towards Lent, the atmospheric riverside quarter along the Drava.

Lent is a natural place to slow down before heading uphill. Its promenade follows the river, and the Old Vine House adds a wine-culture note to the walk. The area is close enough to the centre that it does not require complicated planning.

After exploring the old town, make your way to the Pohorska vzpenjača for the mountain portion of the day. Spend the remaining time on a short forest walk, then return to the city at a comfortable pace. This format works particularly well when the weather is settled but you do not want to spend every hour outdoors.

Reverse the order if you prefer quieter trails earlier in the day. Either way, avoid trying to force Areh, the vineyard road and central Maribor into one short outing. Pohorje and the old town already make a complete experience.

How to make it a full day

For a fuller mountain day, travel onwards to Areh or begin there by car. Give yourself time for several gentle walks, pauses in the meadows, and the gradual transition between forest and open upland ground. This version of Pohorje suits travellers who enjoy being outside more than checking off city sights.

Alternatively, make the day about contrast. Spend the morning on Pohorje, then head northeast into the vineyard hills for a late meal or tasting. This creates a memorable mountain-and-wine itinerary, although it is much easier with a car or arranged transport.

If vineyards are your priority from the outset, skip the mountain and dedicate the day to the Heart of the Vineyards road. You will have more time to enjoy the landscape and will not need to rush between two very different parts of the region.

Season, clothing and access checks

Pohorje changes character through the year. In winter, snow-sport infrastructure shapes the slopes. In warmer months, the appeal shifts towards forest walking, meadows and cooler air above Maribor. Spring and autumn can be particularly atmospheric, but wet ground and changing temperatures require care.

Bring layers even when Maribor feels warm. The plateau can be cooler, windier and damper than the city. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, while water and a light waterproof layer are sensible additions for any longer walk.

Before leaving town, confirm cable-car operation and assess the mountain conditions for yourself. If access is uncertain, do not treat the cable car as guaranteed. Maribor’s historic centre, Lent and the wine hills still offer an enjoyable alternative, while Pohorje can remain the highlight for another day.
