Lake Koman Ferry from Shkodër: Tickets, Transfers and How to Plan the Journey
Plan the Lake Koman crossing from Shkodër with clear advice on transfers, ferry reservations, Fierza connections, and routes to Valbona and Theth.

The Lake Koman ferry from Shkoder is one of Albania’s most memorable travel experiences, but it is not a ferry that leaves from the city itself. Shkodër is the practical base for arranging an early road transfer to Koman, where the boat crosses a narrow, mountain-framed reservoir to Fierza. With advance bookings and a clear onward plan, the journey becomes a smooth gateway to Valbona and the Albanian Alps.

What the Lake Koman ferry route actually is
The Lake Koman ferry connects the remote terminals of Koman and Fierza in northern Albania. It travels through a dramatic flooded valley, where steep limestone slopes rise straight from the water. For many travellers, the crossing is as important as the destination.
Despite its name, Lake Koman is a man-made reservoir on the Drin River system. Its winding shape and rugged setting give the journey the feeling of travelling through a mountain gorge rather than across an open lake.
The ferry carries foot passengers and, depending on the vessel and arrangement, vehicles. It is a working transport link for northern Albania, not simply a sightseeing cruise. That distinction matters when planning: boarding procedures, vehicle space and seasonal operations all need confirmation before you travel.
Koman and Fierza are the real departure points
Shkodër has no Lake Koman ferry terminal. The boat departs from Koman Ferry Terminal, reached by road from Shkodër, and arrives at Fierza Ferry Terminal. Most independent travellers use a pre-arranged transfer from Shkodër to reach Koman before boarding.
This route works especially well for travellers heading into the Valbona Valley. It can also form part of a longer loop through Valbona and Theth, two of the best-known mountain areas in Albania.

Getting from Shkodër to Koman Ferry Terminal
Shkodër is the logical place to prepare for the journey. It has a wider choice of accommodation, restaurants and transport providers than the small settlements near Koman. Stay in the city the night before if you can, particularly when you need an early transfer.
The road to Koman is scenic but demanding. It runs through increasingly remote terrain and includes winding mountain sections. The journey can take longer than its distance suggests, so it is not wise to treat the transfer as a casual last-minute connection.
Arrange the transfer before arrival day
Many travellers book a combined arrangement that includes the Shkodër-to-Koman transfer and the ferry crossing. Others reserve each leg separately. Either approach can work, but make sure the transfer and ferry timings are compatible.
- Confirm the pickup location in Shkodër, as agencies may use hotels, central meeting points or designated roadside stops.
- Ask how early you should be ready and how much time the driver allows for boarding.
- Tell the provider if you have large luggage, sports equipment or a vehicle.
- Keep your accommodation address accessible, especially if your pickup is near the old town or pedestrian streets.
If you are travelling by rental car, check whether you intend to take it across the lake. Vehicle space should be reserved in advance, and the route after Fierza may not suit every type of vehicle. Some travellers prefer to leave the car in Shkodër and continue by transfer.

Lake Koman ferry tickets and reservations
Reserve the ferry ahead whenever your itinerary depends on it. This is particularly important for travellers carrying vehicles and for those connecting to Valbona accommodation, hiking plans or onward transport. The route operates on a seasonal basis, and schedules can change with operating conditions.
When booking, be clear about what you need. A passenger ticket is different from a place for a car, motorcycle or bicycle. If your journey includes a transfer from Shkodër, confirm whether it is included in the price or booked separately.
Details to confirm before you book
- Your travel date and direction: Koman to Fierza or Fierza to Koman.
- The number of passengers and type of luggage.
- Whether you are travelling with a vehicle.
- Your transfer from Shkodër to Koman, if required.
- Your onward ride from Fierza to Bajram Curri or Valbona.
- The operator’s requested check-in and boarding time.
Do not rely on an old online timetable or a traveller’s previous experience. Confirm the operating plan directly with the relevant provider close to your travel date. Seasonal transport in the mountains can shift, and missing the boat can disrupt the rest of the day.

Boarding at Koman and the crossing to Fierza
Koman Ferry Terminal sits in a remote mountain setting, so it feels very different from a city port. Transfers usually bring passengers close to the embarkation area, where you will wait for boarding instructions. Arrive with time to spare rather than assuming you can join at the last minute.
Keep your essentials with you. Store valuables, medication, water, a light layer and any motion-sickness supplies in a small daypack. The lake is usually calm compared with open sea crossings, yet some travellers still feel uncomfortable on winding water routes or in changing conditions.
A journey made for the views
The crossing is known for its narrow channels, forested slopes, rocky cliffs and isolated homes high above the waterline. Find a place outside if conditions are comfortable, but bring sun protection and a waterproof layer. Weather in the Albanian Alps can change quickly, even when the day begins bright.
The ferry eventually reaches Fierza Ferry Terminal, on the eastern side of the lake. Do not assume that arrival at Fierza means you have arrived in Valbona. The final road transfer is a separate journey and should be planned in advance.
Onward travel from Fierza to Valbona
Fierza is the transition point between the lake and the mountains. From here, many travellers continue through Bajram Curri, the regional town that serves as a transport and supply hub for the area. It is a useful place for basic services, but most hikers continue onward to Valbona.
Valbona Valley National Park lies farther into the Albanian Alps. Transfers from Fierza often follow the road via Bajram Curri, then enter the broad, beautiful Valbona Valley beneath high peaks. Book this leg alongside your ferry where possible, especially if you are arriving with accommodation already reserved.
Plan the valley as an overnight destination
Valbona deserves more than a rushed stop. Most visitors stay at least one night, whether they are hiking, enjoying the mountain scenery or preparing for the route to Theth. Guesthouses are spread along the valley, so confirm your exact accommodation location with your host and transfer provider.
If you are heading into the mountains, carry cash, suitable footwear and enough essentials for a night away from larger towns. Mobile coverage and services can be less consistent than in Shkodër.
Valbona, Theth and return-route planning
The classic Albanian Alps route links Shkodër, Koman, Fierza and Valbona, then continues on foot over Valbona Pass toward Theth National Park. It is a rewarding multi-day itinerary, but it is not a simple day trip.
The Valbona-to-Theth hike is seasonal and weather-dependent. Snow, rain and poor visibility can make the mountain route unsafe or unsuitable. Check local conditions with accommodation hosts or qualified local guides before committing to the walk.
Think about luggage before the hike
Many hikers travel with a small pack and arrange for larger bags to be moved separately, where this service is available. Others leave excess luggage in Shkodër and return for it later. This makes the hike more enjoyable and avoids carrying city-travel baggage over steep mountain terrain.
Theth also has separate road access from Shkodër. That means you can complete a loop: travel from Shkodër to Koman, take the ferry to Fierza, continue to Valbona, hike to Theth, then return to Shkodër by road. Reverse routes are also possible, but every transfer should be checked before you set out.
Shala River is not the Fierza ferry route
The Shala River is another popular Lake Koman-area experience, especially in warmer months. However, a Shala River boat excursion is not the same as the Koman-to-Fierza ferry crossing.
Shala River trips usually use smaller boats and focus on a scenic day excursion into a side valley. They follow separate seasonal arrangements and do not replace transport to Fierza, Bajram Curri or Valbona.
If Valbona is your goal, book the cross-lake Lake Koman ferry and arrange the Fierza-to-Valbona transfer. If you want to visit Shala River, allow an additional day or build it into a different northern Albania itinerary.
A simple way to plan the journey
The most reliable approach is to treat the route as three connected transport legs: Shkodër to Koman by road, Koman to Fierza by ferry, and Fierza to Valbona by road. Reserve each part in advance, or use a provider that coordinates the full chain.
Spend the night before in Shkodër, travel light for the crossing, and leave enough time in Valbona for the mountains rather than forcing a same-day return. The lake journey rewards travellers who plan it as part of the adventure, not as a quick transfer between two pins on a map.
