Get the taste of Athens. Indulge in a stroll around the heart of the historic Old City of Athens, before going deeper in the neighbourhoods of the city exploring the alternative and artistic streets of Psyrri and Monastiraki. Make more than 8 different stops during our walk and taste a variety of samples – enough to fill your belly to the brim with all the amazing greek flavours! From home-made dishes and street foods, to traditional souvlaki and cheesepie – the Taste of Athens tour is your chance to immerse yourself inside Athens' food scene and acquaint yourself with greek culinary culture and habits.
Stop 1
Meet your guide at the church in Monastiraki Square, then begin your half-day walking tour with a fresh fruit juice and koulouri, an assortment of Greek breakfast items including cheese pie and spinach pie. Enjoy this with a traditional Greek coffee at a local cafe.
Stop 2
Explore the backstreets around one of the Europe's oldest markets. This area is famous for herb and spice shops, where you can taste and smell traditional products like Greek yogurt, olive oil, tea, chamomile, and cured beef.
Stop 3
Walk over to the chic area of Aiolou, home to some of the best local restaurants in Athens. Try Greek meze, including ouzo or tsipouro, traditional Greek liqueurs. Dive into an enticing pastry shop to sample loukoumades. These golden donuts are unlike any you’ve ever eaten before, doused in sweet syrup and sprinkled with cinnamon and walnuts.
Listen to your guide’s entertaining and interesting stories about culture and daily life in Greece, and then head to the meat and fish market of Varvakeios Agora. If you still have room in your belly, it is the time to try souvlaki in one of the most traditional spots in Athens. Let your guide get in line for you, as you rest in the beautiful Agia Eirini square. Marinated in lemon juice, olive oil, oregano, salt and pepper, grilled on skewers, and served in pita bread, souvlaki or gyro is the final and most important stop. Delight your taste buds and discover the real Athens.
