Podgorica City Walking Tour

Tour programme

A city walking tour that will introduce you to Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, and it's administrative, cultural and economic centre.

The wider area has been inhabited since the Stone Age, but its urban history starts with the arrival of the Romans in the 2nd century B.C. Dating from the period of Illyrian-Roman wars, Podgorica was always at the crossroads for Greek travellers, Roman legionnaires, Byzantine messengers, Serbian noblemen, Venetian merchants, Turkish invaders, Montenegrin warriors...

More than 70 bombings in the Second World War have wiped out many buildings and monuments from the previous centuries. During our 90 minutes walk, we will pass by some of these remaining traces of the previous centuries but will also take a look at the way the city was rebuilt during the communist period and in the later decades.

  1. Trg Republike, Novaka Miloseva, Podgorica, Podgorica Municipality Monteneg

Our meeting point is at the centre of Podgorica – Independence Square (formerly Square of the Republic), at the fountain. In case of rain, the guide will be positioned by the Societe Generale Bank, under the eaves surrounding the square.

We will pass by Municipality building, briefly stop in front of the statue of Marko Miljanov, one the famous generals and writers from the end of the 19 century.

  2. Montenegrin National Theatre, Ulica Stanka Dragojevica 18, Podgorica, Podg

From the Bokeska street, we will pass by the National Theatre, and continue towards the statue of Petar II Petrovic Njegos, a famous prince-bishop, writer and philosopher.

  3. Moraca River, Near Rzaca Mountain, Podgorica, Podgorica Municipality Montenegro

We continue our journey via one of the bridges over Moraca River, which flows through Podgorica.

  4. Millennium Bridge, Bul. Ivana Crnojevica, Podgorica, Podgorica Municipality Montenegro

Our tour leads us over the Moraca river, via one of the pedestrian bridges, and from here we will have an excellent view of the Millennium Bridge, one of the recognizable landmarks of Podgorica.

  5. Vladimir Vysotsky Monument, Jovana Tomasevica bb, Podgorica, Podgorica Municipality

We will also make a brief stop at the statue of Vladimir Vysotsky, a Russian poet, singer and songwriter, who died young, but who lived in Podgorica for a while.

  6. Blazo Jovanovic Bridge, Moraca bb, Podgorica

We will cross the river Moraca again, at Blazo Jovanovic Bridge and continue towards Sastavci (or Skaline), at the confluence of the rivers Ribnica and Moraca.

  7. Sastavci, Moraca Ribnice, Podgorica, Podgorica Municipality

Sastavci or Skaline is a very picturesque site, but admittedly uncared for. Above the confluence stand barely visible ruins of the fortress of Ribnica. These are known as Nemanjin grad, as it was here that Stefan Nemanja who subsequently founded Nemanjic dynasty, was born. We will cross an old picturesque stone bridge on our way to Stara Varos, the oldest preserved quarter of Podgorica, dating back to the Ottoman rule.

  8. Starodoganjska Mosque, 42 Gojka Radonjica, Podgorica, Podgorica Municipality

At Stara Varos we will briefly stop at the Starodoganjska Mosque, built in 15th century and for a long time maintained by the traders from the nearby shops.

  9. Clock Tower, Trg Becir Bega Osmanagica bb Stara Varos, Podgorica, Podgorica Municipality

Sahat Kula (The Clock Tower) is one of the important landmarks of Podgorica. It stands at the edge of the Stara Varos, facing the socialist apartment blocks across the street. Built in the 18th century by Adzi Pasha Osmanagic.

  10. Monument to A.S. Pushkin and N.N. Goncharova, Boulevard of St. Peter of Cetinje, Podorica Municipality

Located on the corner of Njegoseva street, it portraits the famous Russian poet Pushkin reading poetry to his wife Natalija Gonchareva.
