CROATIA TRAVEL GUIDE

Best Things to Do in Zagreb

Explore Zagreb’s historic streets, characterful museums, leafy parks and café culture with this curated guide for a memorable one- or two-day visit.

Updated September 2026 · Tours to Balkans

The best things to do in zagreb reveal a city that feels both grand and lived-in. Croatia’s capital rewards unhurried walking: begin among the tram-lined squares, climb into the historic Upper Town, then linger in the elegant parks and café terraces of the Lower Town. This is a practical shortlist for first-time visitors who want Zagreb’s essential character in one or two days.

Begin in Zagreb’s historic heart

Ban Jelačić Square is the natural point of arrival. It is Zagreb’s central meeting place, framed by handsome façades and connected to the rest of the city by tram lines. The square has an energetic, everyday feel, yet it also provides an easy sense of direction.

Look for the statue of Ban Josip Jelačić and the Manduševac Fountain before heading north towards the old centre. From here, Zagreb’s main sights unfold within an easy walk. The Upper Town rises ahead, while the Lower Town’s parks and museums extend south.

Experience Dolac Market in the morning

A few minutes from the square, Dolac Market gives the city a more intimate voice. Its distinctive red parasols shelter stalls piled with seasonal fruit and vegetables, while nearby vendors sell local cheeses and other Croatian specialities. It is a fine place to see Zagreb’s food culture in action rather than simply admire historic buildings.

Visit earlier in the day for the fullest market atmosphere. Even if you are not shopping for a meal, Dolac is worth a slow circuit. Pick up something simple to eat, then continue uphill towards the old town.

Zagreb, Croatia — Zagreb Cathedral in Zagreb, Croatia

Zagreb Cathedral stands close by in the Kaptol district. Its Gothic silhouette remains one of the city’s key landmarks. Restoration work can affect views and access, but it is still worth approaching to appreciate its scale and position at the edge of the historic centre.

Wander Upper Town, Zagreb’s most atmospheric quarter

Gornji Grad, or Upper Town, is the essential Zagreb walk. Cobblestone lanes, gas lamps, quiet courtyards and formal civic buildings give this hilltop district a distinct mood. It is compact enough to explore without a strict route, but several stops should not be missed.

See the tiled roof of St. Mark’s Church

St. Mark’s Church is Zagreb’s signature image. The Gothic church faces St. Mark’s Square, where important Croatian government buildings create a stately backdrop. Its vividly tiled roof carries the coats of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia, alongside Zagreb’s emblem.

The church is best appreciated as part of the square and surrounding streets. Take time to step back and notice how its bold roof pattern changes the otherwise restrained palette of Upper Town. It is an unmistakable symbol of Zagreb, yet the setting feels more intimate than monumental.

Pass through Stone Gate

Stone Gate is more than a surviving piece of the old city walls. This covered passage contains a shrine to an image of the Virgin Mary that survived a historic fire, and locals often pause here to light candles or leave messages. Keep your voice low as you pass through; it remains a place of personal devotion.

From Stone Gate, follow the lanes towards the Strossmayer Promenade. This tree-lined terrace looks across Zagreb’s rooftops and the Lower Town beyond. It is especially appealing late in the day, when the city’s formal avenues and distant hills come into view.

Take Zagreb’s famously short funicular ride

The Zagreb Funicular is a small experience, but it belongs on a first visit. It runs from Tomićeva Street in the Lower Town up to Upper Town, connecting two sides of central Zagreb in a remarkably steep and short ascent.

Its appeal lies in the ritual rather than the journey time. Ride it uphill before exploring Gornji Grad, or descend after visiting St. Mark’s Church and the promenade. Tomićeva Street itself is a pleasant transition point, with the historic centre above and the livelier streets below.

If you prefer to walk, the climb is manageable. Still, the funicular is part of Zagreb’s urban identity and offers a charming contrast to the grander trams crossing Ban Jelačić Square.

Choose a museum with personality

Zagreb has a strong museum culture, but a short stay calls for selectivity. The Museum of Broken Relationships is the standout choice for many visitors because it feels unlike a conventional gallery or history museum.

Museum of Broken Relationships

Located in Upper Town, this museum presents personal objects donated from failed relationships, each accompanied by a story. The objects may be funny, painful, strange or unexpectedly ordinary. Together, the contributions from around the world create a moving portrait of attachment, loss and memory.

The experience works because it is direct and human. You do not need specialist knowledge to engage with it, and the compact setting fits naturally into an Upper Town afternoon. Allow yourself time to read rather than rushing from object to object.

Art-minded visitors can also consider Strossmayer’s Old Masters Gallery in the Lower Town. Its collection offers a more traditional museum counterpoint, in keeping with Zagreb’s nineteenth-century civic elegance. For contemporary art, head across the river to the Museum of Contemporary Art in New Zagreb. Its large modern building and focus on Croatian contemporary work make it a rewarding extension for visitors with more time.

Walk the green arc of the Lower Town

Zagreb, Croatia — Lenuci Horseshoe in Zagreb, Croatia

The Lenuci Horseshoe gives Zagreb much of its refined Lower Town character. This sequence of landscaped squares and parks curves through the city centre, linking cultural institutions, grand façades and open green space. It is not a single park, but a graceful urban walk.

Zrinjevac and King Tomislav Square

Zrinjevac Park is among the most enjoyable sections. Mature trees, pathways and a graceful pavilion encourage a slower pace. It is the kind of place where Zagreb’s café-led rhythm makes sense: stroll, sit for a while, then continue without feeling that you have left the city behind.

Further south, King Tomislav Square opens towards the main railway station and the Art Pavilion. The broad lawn and formal surroundings show a different side of Zagreb from Upper Town’s medieval lanes. Together, these spaces make the Lower Town ideal for a relaxed afternoon on foot.

For a one-day visit, walk at least part of the Horseshoe after Upper Town. With two days, give it more time and combine it with a museum stop. The contrast between the old hilltop core and this planned nineteenth-century district is central to understanding Zagreb.

Go beyond the centre if time allows

Mirogoj Cemetery is one of Zagreb’s most memorable architectural visits. Designed around imposing arcades by architect Hermann Bollé, its entrances and landscaped grounds create a solemn, beautiful place for reflection. Many notable Croatian cultural and political figures are buried here, but even visitors unfamiliar with the names can appreciate the setting.

Mirogoj sits outside the walkable core, so public transport or a taxi makes sense. It is particularly worthwhile for travellers interested in architecture, photography and quieter places with a strong sense of history.

For more greenery, Maksimir Park offers lakes, woodland and space away from the central streets. Meanwhile, New Zagreb provides a different urban perspective south of the Sava River. Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art there if modern architecture and art appeal more than another historic square.

Eat, drink and linger like a local

Zagreb is not a city that demands constant sightseeing. Some of its best moments happen at a café table. Tkalčićeva Street, which follows the route of a former medieval stream, is a popular pedestrian street for coffee, drinks and evening conversation. Its terraces make an easy finish after exploring Dolac, the Cathedral area or Upper Town.

For a quick food-focused stop, return to Dolac Market and build a simple picnic from local produce, cheese and bread. For a longer break, choose a café in the Lower Town and watch the steady rhythm of trams, walkers and cyclists. Coffee culture here is social and unhurried.

If you visit in winter, Zagreb’s Advent celebrations can add seasonal lights and festive food to the centre. However, the city’s appeal does not depend on that period. Its real strengths are permanent: a walkable historic core, distinctive cultural stops, leafy public spaces and a relaxed habit of lingering.

A simple Zagreb itinerary for one or two days

  • One day: Begin at Ban Jelačić Square and Dolac Market, see the Cathedral from Kaptol, explore Upper Town and St. Mark’s Church, visit the Museum of Broken Relationships, then walk through Zrinjevac and the Lower Town parks.
  • Two days: Add Mirogoj Cemetery, spend longer along the Lenuci Horseshoe, and choose between the Old Masters Gallery or the Museum of Contemporary Art in New Zagreb.
  • For a slower visit: Leave room for Tkalčićeva Street, a funicular ride and a long café stop. Those moments often become the most Zagreb-like memories.

Zagreb works best when you balance landmarks with wandering. Its greatest pleasures sit close together: the red roofs of Upper Town, the market’s morning bustle, a museum with real emotional weight and a shady park bench in the Lower Town.
