A Balkan trip can take you from Dubrovnik’s city walls to coffee in Prishtina, then south to Athens or east to Istanbul. Mobile data helps with the practical parts: finding your apartment, messaging a guide and checking the next transfer. The right eSIM depends on every country on your route, including the ones you only pass through.
Horizon eSIM, based in Prishtina, offers a regional Balkans plan covering 11 countries. Prices currently start at €1.29 for 1 GB over 7 days. Kosovo is available separately and can be added to the same order. Here is how to choose a plan and budget for the trip.
Starting in Dubrovnik
A stay in Dubrovnik might include the old town, a walk along the walls and time by the sea. If the whole holiday is in Croatia, a country plan may cost less. Once you add Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina or Kotor in Montenegro, compare regional coverage before buying.
Balkans eSIM Prices and Coverage
The Horizon Balkans eSIM shares one data allowance across Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey. Kosovo is not included in that regional allowance.
All prices below are in euros and were checked on Horizon’s live storefront on 16 October 2026. They exclude coupon codes, future rewards and one-time account promotions. Prices can change; check the selected plan and final checkout before paying.
| Data allowance | Validity | Total price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | €1.29 |
| 3 GB | 15 days | €3.51 |
| 3 GB | 30 days | €3.51 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | €5.73 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | €11.28 |
| 20 GB | 30 days | €22.38 |
These are total data pools, not daily allowances. For example, 10 GB over 30 days means 10 GB to use across the included destinations during the plan’s validity. You do not receive a new 10 GB when you cross a border.
Choose Data for the Way You Travel
For occasional maps, messages and booking checks, consider a smaller allowance and use accommodation Wi-Fi for large uploads. Video calls, social video and sharing data with a laptop use more. Your phone’s recent data-use screen is a better guide than trip length alone. A 30-day plan can also suit a shorter holiday; compare its actual price with the shorter options.
One Plan for an Adriatic Route
Dubrovnik, Mostar, Kotor and Tirana are in four countries included in the regional plan. A 10 GB plan costs €11.28 for up to 30 days, with one shared allowance for that route. Keep the eSIM installed as you cross borders and let it connect to a supported local network. Reception still varies with terrain, buildings and network conditions, so save key addresses and maps offline.
Country Plans for a Longer Stay in One Place
A regional plan is convenient when several countries are real stops. For a holiday mostly in one country, compare the local option. The table links to each destination’s plans and shows a consistent 10 GB allowance with 30-day validity, using prices checked on 16 October 2026.
| Country | Places to plan around | 10 GB for 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| Albania | Tirana and Berat | €6.61 |
| Bosnia and Herzegovina | Sarajevo and Mostar | €11.18 |
| Bulgaria | Sofia and Plovdiv | €5.18 |
| Croatia | Dubrovnik and Split | €4.81 |
| Greece | Athens and Thessaloniki | €4.97 |
| Montenegro | Kotor and Budva | €6.47 |
| North Macedonia | Skopje and Ohrid | €9.35 |
| Romania | Bucharest and Brașov | €4.90 |
| Serbia | Belgrade and Novi Sad | €5.69 |
| Slovenia | Ljubljana and Lake Bled | €5.23 |
| Turkey | Istanbul and Edirne | €3.92 |
| Kosovo | Prishtina and Prizren | €18.19 |
These are separate country purchases, not additions to the regional data pool. Buying a Croatia eSIM does not give you data in Montenegro, and unused data from one country plan does not transfer to another.
When the Country Price Makes More Sense
Ten gigabytes for a Croatia-only trip costs €4.81, compared with €11.28 for the regional option. The difference buys wider listed coverage. That can be useful for a trip into Bosnia and Herzegovina or Montenegro; it adds little if you remain in Dubrovnik and Split. Check your existing mobile contract too, since it may already include enough data for the countries you will visit.
Add Kosovo for Prishtina and Prizren
Kosovo deserves its own stop, whether you are visiting family, spending an afternoon around Prishtina’s NEWBORN monument or walking through Prizren’s old town. A longer visit might continue to Peja and the Rugova area. Plan the data for those days separately from the rest of your Balkan route.
The Kosovo eSIM currently offers 3 GB for 15 days at €8.49, or 10 GB for 30 days at €18.19. The smaller plan costs less overall; the larger plan gives you more data and a longer validity window. Choose for your visit, including any video calls or hotspot use.
Two eSIMs in One Order
You can add Kosovo alongside the Balkans plan before checkout. The order contains two separate eSIM profiles, with separate allowances and validity periods. Install both and give them clear names. Select the Kosovo line for mobile data in Kosovo, then switch back to the Balkans line when you reach an included country.
For a trip through Albania and North Macedonia with a Kosovo visit, Balkans 10 GB for 30 days plus Kosovo 3 GB for 15 days costs €19.77 (€11.28 + €8.49). Choosing Kosovo 10 GB for 30 days instead brings the total to €29.47. Neither combination creates one shared pool across all destinations.
Athens and a Wider Greek Itinerary
In Athens, mobile data is useful between the Acropolis, the streets around Plaka and your next transport connection. Keep tickets and your accommodation address available offline, then use data for updated directions and messages when you need them.
A Greece eSIM is worth comparing for a Greece-only holiday: 5 GB for 30 days currently costs €2.58, and 10 GB costs €4.97. If your itinerary continues to Albania, North Macedonia or another country included in Horizon’s Balkans plan, the regional option can cover those land stops with the same profile.
Keep Ferry Journeys in Perspective
A plan that lists Greece can be used where its supported mobile networks are available. That does not promise reception throughout a ferry crossing or in every sheltered bay. Download boarding information before leaving port and save large uploads for a suitable connection. Buying more data changes the allowance, not the signal.
A Short Stop or a Working Holiday
A few days of messages and maps call for a different budget from daily video meetings. Hotspot sharing is free on every Horizon plan, so you can connect a compatible laptop or a travelling companion’s device. Those devices use the same allowance as your phone; they do not receive a second pool.
Continue East to Istanbul and Turkey
Turkey connects naturally with a southeastern European itinerary through Eastern Thrace, including Edirne and the European side of Istanbul. Istanbul itself spans Europe and Asia. That geography makes it a useful final stop on a Balkan journey, without treating all of Turkey as part of the Balkans.
Horizon’s regional Balkans coverage list includes Turkey. For a Turkey-only visit, compare the Turkey eSIM: 5 GB for 30 days is €2.06, and 10 GB is €3.92 at the time of checking. An itinerary linking Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey may be easier to manage with the regional plan instead.
Set Up Before the Travel Day
Install your eSIM over a reliable internet connection before departure and keep the installation instructions accessible offline. In Istanbul, a working data line helps you find an arrival meeting point, message your hotel and check a route between neighbourhoods. Save essential details first so you are not dependent on a signal at the moment you need them.
Horizon plans have no throttling. Actual speeds depend on the local network, signal, phone and congestion. Once a fixed data allowance is exhausted, service stops rather than continuing at a reduced speed; check the available options before you run out.
Install Your eSIM Before Departure
Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, then choose the countries, data allowance and validity you need. Horizon’s supported devices and installation guide explain the setup.
- Install over reliable Wi-Fi before travelling. If you bought both Balkans and Kosovo, install and label both profiles.
- Keep the travel line off until you reach its destination. Validity starts with the first connection to a supported network there. There is no first-use deadline.
- Select the correct Horizon line for mobile data and enable data roaming on that line. Turn off data roaming and automatic data switching on your home line.
- After a border crossing, allow the phone to find a supported local network. In Kosovo, select your separate Kosovo eSIM. Keep the profiles installed while troubleshooting.
Questions Travellers Ask
Can I Keep My WhatsApp Number?
You can continue using WhatsApp with your existing account over the travel-data connection. Horizon’s listed plans are data-only, so they do not supply a local number for ordinary calls or SMS. Your home operator’s charges still apply to activity on its own line.
Can I Add Another Country or More Data?
You can add another country as its own eSIM in the same order. That does not expand the coverage of an existing profile. For more data on an installed eSIM, check My eSIMs: it shows eligible top-up options when the selected plan supports them.
Can I Request a Refund After Using the eSIM?
Yes. Horizon refunds the full amount paid on request, whether the eSIM is unused, partly used or fully used, with no time limit for requesting it. Purchase verification and checks against duplicate refunds still apply. See the refund policy.
Where Can I Get Help?
Horizon offers 24/7 human support in all languages, with guaranteed instant replies. Contact Horizon support for setup or plan questions. An instant reply does not mean every issue can be resolved instantly.
Choose the Plan Around Your Route
Write down each country you will visit, including transit stops. Compare a country plan for a longer stay in one place, or a Balkans plan for several included countries. Add Kosovo separately when it is part of the trip, then check the final allowance, validity and price before checkout.
